What happened?
Friday, Aug, 12, 2005. I worked in a
machine shop in Jonesboro, AR. At
5pm, I left work to go to the local
motorcycle dealership to buy a new
helmet to wear in the weekend's charity
bike ride. Afterward, I rode my bike by
my brother's house for a quick visit on
the way home. After a discussion about
the upcoming weekend, I headed
toward home. It was a long trip...
While riding down the busy two lane
highway, I crossed paths with a busy
minded teenager in a hurry to take a
shower. In his haste to beat the
oncoming traffic, the young man
neglected to notice me, my headlight, or
my bright yellow bike mixed in with the
traffic. At @40 mph, he turned his truck
sharply left across the oncoming lane,
striking me and my bike at
approximately a 45 degree angle, just
behind the front fork. The impact was
tremendous and sent me and bike
cartewheeling down the highway at 50
miles per hour.
My leg had taken the full force of the
impact and was hanging off of me like a
wet towel. Though attempts were made
to save the leg, these soon failed and I
requested it be amputated a week after I
was hit .
Among other injuries,my pelvis had
opened up and nearly separated from
my spine. It was broken in two more
places, including the socket of my left
hip. My spleen was also torn along with
damage to my right knee, ankle, and
foot.
So violent was the impact, that my
newly purchased Fulmer helmet,
properly strapped on, came off and was
finally located over 200 feet from the
point of impact. The police had already
written "No Helmet" in their report when
it was finally located.
